My (CENSORED)th birthday was some days ago.
Ok, ok...I turned 36.
In the brainstorming of what to do, I figured I wanted to incorporate films into it. A few things came to mind:
One was an idea I read from someone on Letterboxd. This person wrote a review of 1942's Casablanca saying that they watch it on their birthday each year. Upon remembering that, I thought about what a great idea that is. I even made a list of favorite movies of mine that could fit. After much deliberation, I chose 2011's Drive, a movie that I always enjoy rewatching and, quite frankly, makes me feel so cool when I watch it.
Upon adopting this idea, I debuted it on this year's birthday. I popped it into the Blu-ray player right at the end of the day and enjoyed it. I think the biggest appeal this idea brings to me is that it's something to look forward to. Birthdays aren't always great. My thinking is that whatever happens on the day, I can always look forward to my movie later. And that's a nice thing to keep in one's mind.
Another idea is going the Clarence Worley route from True Romance (1992): Go to the movie theater on your birthday! I didn't do that on the day, but I did go a few days after to view The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But that's certainly something worth doing.
Nothing like good cinema!
