This is Irvin Hernández's countdown of the top 20 films of the year.
20. John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum: Pure exhilarating action epic. The world of John Wick keeps getting better and I can’t get enough of it. Bring Chapters 4, 5, 6, etc.
19. Little Monsters: The definition of a surprisingly sweet, bloody and funny zombie indie movie. Lupita Nyong'o once again proving she is one best working actress of our times.
18. Uncut Gems: Exhilarating, anxiety-inducing, and frenetic. It's Adam Sandler’s best performance and a gem of a film!
17. Midsommar: To this day, Midsommar stayed with me, making me think more than any other movie this year.
16. Avengers: Endgame: It was the most incredible experience with a packed theatre. One of the most exciting movies of this or any year.
15. Ford v Ferrari: Exciting, entertaining, at times exhilarating and moving, Ford v Ferrari is the definition of a by-the-book well-directed film. Christian Bale continues to prove is he is one of the best working actors today, but the MVPs are the car racing sequences.
14. Booksmart: This is pure cinematic enjoyment and the best directorial debut of the year. Great cast aside, Olivia Wilde behind the camera is the MVP of this comedy.
13. Us: Lupita Nyong'o gives us two of the most intense and disturbing performances of any year. Jordan Peele continues the streak with his latest horror film.
12. Pain and Glory: With Antonio Banderas's best performance, the rich and smart script, and Pedro Almodóvar’s best work in years make this a gem. And...the last shot of the film, stands out as my favorite shot of the year.
11. The Two Popes: Funny, relevant, and smart. This film is supported by great performances by two veteran actors makes this a must-see, but multiple times.
10. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: This is a sweet, deep and emotional experience on every level, but it’s those creative and beautiful touches that Marielle Heller gives to this movie that make this a special film. That restaurant scene...that’s all...and Tom Hanks.
9. Little Women: Charming, touching, beautifully scripted and scored, Greta’s adaptation makes this one an instant classic, and relevant to our times.
8. Knives Out: I can’t get enough of this one. This is Rian Johnson at his best with a stellar cast having a blast together.
7. Marriage Story: When you talk about the best performances of the year 2019, ten years from now, Adam Driver will be in that conversation. Heartbreaking and beautifully crafted, this one will be a winner on Oscar Night.
6. 1917: It will stand the test of time as one of the best war films ever made.
5. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Leo and Brad are two of my favorite actors of all time, and together in a Quentin Tarantino film? It sounds like a dream. But seeing Leo and Brad as best pals made this one of the most enjoyable, pleasant and thoroughly entertaining movies of the year.
4. The Irishman: The end of an era, in the best way possible. This is a masterpiece on every level, an achievement like no other film this year.
3. Jojo Rabbit: This movie, through the endearing beautiful performances from its cast, stole my heart. And it’s that what gets this into my top three; the amount of heart this movie has.
2. The Farewell: Lulu Wang created and directed a very special film, that I can’t stop thinking of. When the credits rolled, tears of joy and happiness were all over my face. If you saw it, you know why. Beautiful film.
1. Parasite: Bong Joon-no directed not only my best film of the year but possibly one of the best of the decade. All the achievements of this film, from its production design, performances, script, and direction make this the most talked-about film of the year and one that can easily sweep this awards season. It’s not a near-perfect film. It is a perfect film.
