Anyone can relate to this film. Many of us are moved by different types of things that inspire us to reach beyond our comfort zones to achieve our personal goals. In this case, it's music.
Gurinder Chadha brings us a Thatcher-era city in Britain, where a Pakistani family lives. Apart from the city going through tough times, Javed (Viveik Kalra) has to deal with bigotry and racism against his people from locals. That, and the fact that he doesn't identify with his culture, are the reasons he wants to get up and leave, especially after being inspired by the music of Bruce Springsteen. Haven't well all gone through that?
It's truly an inspirational story, full of charm and feel good moments. It relays a message of standing up for yourself and going after your own wishes, even to the chagrin of your closest ones.
Whether it's The Boss, any music, or film, or artist, where you draw inspiration from is best when it's for good.
My score: ★★★½
