Five Categories The Big Awards Should Add

We've made it to the point of awards season in which we begin to hear nominations from the big award ceremonies we look forward to each year. There were all kinds of reactions from the recently announced nominees for the Golden Globe Awards by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Which got us at For Films' Sake thinking...what categories can the big awards add to make things better for everyone to be recognized with their due? So, to answer the question, we came up with these.

Best Female Director

This is likely the most demanded by fans and people in the industry. Since the HFPA announced an all-male Best Director lineup (again), this could be the way to solve this issue. It's been such a strong year for female filmmakers, that it's disappointing to see that Greta Gerwig, Alma Har'el, Marielle Heller, Olivia Wilde, and many more get snubbed. If the Academy and HFPA don't actively vote for more females, they SHOULD add that category, just like they do with the actors' awards.

Best Young Actor

Many awards, like the Critics' Choice, have this category. Wouldn't it be a hoot to see a young, up-and-coming actor under the age of, say, 21, to get an Oscar for a great performance? I say treat it like Best Foreign Film, which would also qualify for Best Picture. Imagine if that existed this year and the field could be like Noah Jupe (Honey Boy), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit), and Shahadi Wright Joseph (Us), to name a few.

Best Stuntperson

This is an interesting one we came up with. Question: Do you know the name of any stuntperson in the business? Chances are, no. HOW-EVAH! This award would surely put a name to face for these people who have an important job in films, doing what the actors themselves can't exactly do (this side of Tom Cruise). We go to the movies for the actors, but the men and women who do the stunts often gets us the most excited in many parts of movies.

Best Cast Performance

Ok, hear me out. This actually is the main prize of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, sure. But maybe this could give a chance for a film that isn't nominated for Best Picture to compete for the collective performance of their ensemble. I think, for example, Avengers: Endgame would be a good candidate to be nominated for this. No one can deny the great performances from its star-studded cast and given its popularity and the fact that it's the highest-grossing film of all time, it's bound to capture the interest of the public!

Best Voice Actor

This is one that I, personally, would love. Whether it's for animated films or for voice work in live-action films (like Scarlett Johansson in Her and Olivia Colman in Locke), there's a lot of valuable voice work done each year. You don't see the actors physically, but it's their voice acting that brings the point across.

Those are just a few suggestions to recognize those who otherwise wouldn't. Which of these options would YOU like the most?
