I have always heard different things from friends and family members about my movie collection. Some friends ask me why I don’t collect digitally, others mention how many steaming services allow me to see the same movies, etc. And in the last week, another friend told me: "You have been here preparing yourself for a quarantine all your life! The latter is true because I have been collecting movies since the year 2000. You can do the math. Yes...I have a lot. Now let’s get to the point of this list. You never now know if any of these steaming services collapse (as the economy is not looking good because of COVID-19)/ Therefore, I can watch my movies anytime I like; whenever I want. So if you are bored during this quarantine, and you find a way to watch any of these movies, do it. It will keep you entertained, distracted, and/or intrigued. Anyways, this is my personal quarantine list. Enjoy!
1. Michael Clayton (2007, dir. Tony Gilroy): Excellent thriller, incredible performances, and hey, Tilda Swinton’s Academy Award-winning performance. That's always a reason to watch and celebrate her win.
2. Inception (2010, dir. Christopher Nolan): Whether I put it on in the background or because I want to again try to decipher the ending, this classic is always a good one to watch...ANYTIME!
3. Arrival (2016, dir. Denis Villeneuve): It’s easily my favorite Denis Villeneuve film. My goodness, it's so poignant. This sci-fi thriller got me from the first 3 minutes thanks to the incredible score and Amy Adams's career-best performance.
4. Man of Steel (2013, dir. Zack Snyder): Possibly not a favorite of many, but Man of Steel will always be on my list. So many things to admire and incredibly undervalued. That movie as a background is pretty cool, but it’s an even better experience to watch the whole 143 minutes. Oh, did I mention that Amy Adams is my favorite actress? I guess it's pretty obvious now.
5. Gravity (2013, dir. Alfonso Cuarón): Besides being one of my favorite movies of all time, this 90-minute sci-fi thriller is too relevant, specifically in the journey of our main character trapped in space. It can be triggering nowadays with all of us trapped in our homes. But hey, that’s not that bad. That’s why we love movies, to help us get through this too.
6. The Incredibles (2004, dir. Brad Bird): Easily my favorite Pixar movie. Love it! So much fun. And we surely need it these days.
7. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011, dir. David Fincher): One of my favorite directors, Mr. David Fincher, directs this haunting, intriguing, and provocative thriller that flies by its 163 minutes runtime! Amazing cast, score, and cinematography. Watch it on a cold night with a glass of wine and the experience might be even better.
8. Mission: Impossible Fallout (2018, dir. Christopher McQuarrie): I can put this one on the background and when I look at the screen, it’s showing my favorite part of the movie. Wait...I can certainly say I wouldn’t edit any scene of this movie, which means I LOVE every scene of it.
9. La La Land (2016, dir. Damien Chazelle): It always makes me smile and its music is so catchy, that it makes the whole movie experience a very unique one. Every time I rewatch it, I find something new. That Damien Chazelle is something!
10. Skyfall (2012, dir. Sam Mendes): My favorite James Bond movie. Cinematography, score, performances, opening title sequence, villain, action sequences, Judi Dench, a plot twist, Bond's childhood past, Moneypenny, set pieces, more Judi Dench, plus Judi Dench’s M’s perfect sarcasm, and...Mr. Daniel Craig. Ok I know, it’s pretty obvious. Just watch it, it’s fun!
Did I mention that this list doesn’t have anything to do with quarantine movie plots? It doesn’t, I bet there are thousands of blogs recommending Contagion, Outbreak, 28 days Later, 10 Cloverfield Lane, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I love those titles! Maybe they will make it on another list. For the moment, watch the ones I mentioned; they're fun!
