Samantha Morton and the Cocaine Bear

I'd wager that you clicked this because you're thinking "what in the heck is he going to go on about in relating these two things?" Let me save you the brain-wracking and reveal that I will not relate the two items in the title (chuckles).

This piece is about quick notes on two things about a number of films I watched this week. Nothing too fancy, just some observations.

Cocaine Bear is...A Cocaine Bear!

Don't you just love when you go into a film knowing exactly what you're going to get? Don't get me wrong, I am ALL ABOUT the "turn-on-the-brain" types. But sometimes, it's just cool to get pretty much what you expect when you hit the cinema or press play. Cocaine Bear delivers on every ounce of that.

Cocaine Bear is about a bear who consumes cocaine. That's basically it. No in-depth analysis, no think-pieces, no foreshadowing or teasing. Just a "here it is, enjoy". And you will. Expect any more, even the teeniest bit, and you'll be disappointed.

Samantha Morton ENTERS the Conversation

In terms of films in 2022, I can say that no one entered a scene quite like Samantha Morton did. She's great in everything for a long time. Just a terrific actor. But I took a little notice at this concept after viewing The Whale earlier this week.

Ms. Morton appears in both The Whale and She Said, two terrific films from last year. Both appearances have a noteworthy distinction: Samantha Morton comes in, steals the film, and walks out before you even notice what just hit you.

In both appearances, she comes into, what I firmly believe, are the turning points of those two films. There is something about her that sticks with you as a viewer. The smolder, the poker face, and THAT VOICE. Just a presence that makes your focus on the film gravitate to her.

Her presence was felt in both films and quite simply, she left both films better than how she found them.
