I'm sure I'm nowhere near alone when expressing the fact that opening my account on Letterboxd changed the way I view and express about films, for the better. The movie-lover social media is at its most popular, becoming a staple of film connoisseurs in the modern world.
This 2023, it'll mark five years since I consciously decided to log and review every movie I watch. It serves as the perfect forum to drop my thoughts in and, as a result, it's the best curation of my watches; that way I can go back and remember the day I've seen specific movies. It sounds so simple and that's just one of the more basic functions of the site, but it streamlines my movie-watching like it wasn't before.
I don't even remember how I stumbled upon Letterboxd. I'll venture to guess that someone on Twitter shared a review of theirs and upon clicking and checking out the website, I was curious to open an account. That was in late 2017. It's interesting because for some time then, I had the itch to write my thoughts on movies I watched on my (then alive) Facebook account. It was nice to get some of those out in the open, but they moved no needles in terms of interactions. After opening my account and getting my feet wet, the decision to go full regalia on Letterboxd, starting with this review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald review from November 17, 2018.
Letterboxd is my favorite social media account. It's where I have the most followers (3,000+ as of the end of 2022) and the most interactions on the reviews I post. I've also discovered many a film that I might've missed and with the advanced feature of adding what channels or streaming services you have, it's easier to find a movie you're interested in.
One of my favorite features is how, via LISTS, I can keep track of movies that I've seen over the years. And also, it's allowed me to create an inventory of the movies I own (at the time of the writing, the count is at 260).
The star-rating system has also allowed me to keep tabs on the quality of the films I watch, particularly those which are favorites.
By no means, am I a critic. But Letterboxd allows me to "play one on TV", in a manner of speaking. It also allows me to meet and interact with like-minded people in the film community.
This is merely a gush session for the site. I swear I wasn't paid to do this (IF ONLY). I feel that its existence has made me more of a lover of movies while making me a better viewer and writer as well. I am but a speck in that huge social media, but I felt compelled to share my stellar experience on there.
