In writing this, I almost feel like I'm going against the grain, because the topic of the Oscars brings out strong feelings on the negative side (in part, for good reasons). It seems almost trendy to bank on the Academy Awards. "Oh, they don't matter", is the consensus (with which I disagree). And yet, we still watch.
So in an attempt to lighten some of the moods, let's just list the many reasons we love the Oscars.
- We enjoy seeing movies we enjoyed get recognized.
- The drama of competition.
- Let's admit it: We sometimes hate watch.
- Rooting for our favorite actors, filmmakers, etc.
- Seeing overdue great artists finally be recognized.
- What will be the biggest surprise win?
- Who's going to give the most memorable speech?
- It's a great reference for movies to watch.
- Predicting winners.
- Who will have the best outfit/suit?
- We enjoy seeing our favorites presenting.
- The prestige of the acting awards hits differently.
- Off-script moments (see Slapgate by Suge Smith).
- "They win again?" Who's going to win the most Oscars?
- We love seeing which clips they use for the nominated actors.
- It's the culmination of a hefty awards season.
- We appreciate the year that was in film.
- Winners often get a boost in their careers.
- It's a good opportunity to discover creatives (for new movie people).
- Will we see another La La Land - Moonlight debacle?
- Watch parties!
- The "water cooler talk" in the next few days.
- Which movie is taking BEST PICTURE?
- We already start thinking of who's winning next year.
- It's the movie equivalent of the SUPER BOWL.
Let's enjoy this night. We love to hate it, but we also love to love it. It's the one night when we are more in tune than most people and we get asked about it. It's out biggest event and we should enjoy it. This list if just a few of the reasons why we love the Oscars. What are YOURS?
